How to Store Your Generator Perfectly
Before and during the generalized
blackouts caused by Hurricane Sandy, many new Jersey residents became owners of
portable generators for the first time. Many new homeowners may not realize
that storing their generator safely is as important as precautions while using
it. After all, you want to be sure that your generator will start the next time
you need it. Here are a few tips for how to store your generator safely.
• For long term storage, it is
normally recommended to store the generator without gasoline. If you do not
want to run the generator until it is empty for the burning gas, you could use
fuel of your car. Most generators use the same type of fuel (regular,
lead-free) than cars. Drain your generator According to the instructions in
your owner's manual.
• Although fuel removal is highly
recommended, you can store the generator with the Fuel inside if you use a
stabilizer to prevent corrosion. If you decide to store the generator with the
gas inside, it is best to leave the fuel tank full and consult the
manufacturer's instructions for details on your specific model.
• If you are storing gasoline
separately, use an approved gas container and keep it in a well-ventilated area
away from home, either in a shed or in an independent garage. Gasoline will
stay longer if stored in a cool, dry place and maintained around 95% with an
added commercial stabilizer.
According to the Briggs &Stratton generator manufacturer's website, before storing the generator, it is
important to thoroughly clean the interior and exterior.
• Clean the generator by looking
around and below to detect signs of oil or fuel leakage.
• Clean accumulated debris from the
inside and outside of the generator, making sure that the hitch, spring and
other motor controls are clean.
• Check that the area around and
behind the muffler is free of any combustible debris.
• Inspect the cooling air slots and
openings, these areas must be clean and unobstructed.
• Before storing your generator,
take it for a set-up to make sure it is ready for use if/when you need it. Most
local lawn mower repair shops are able to provide this service.
Storing your generator properly will
help keep it ready for the next time you need it. Plymouth Rock Assurance also has
